Dr. Tammy Root completed her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies and has a Master’s degree in Psychology. She is currently working on her Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She is joining DynamicWorks Wellness under the supervision of Angela Sastry beginning March 2023. Tammy brings a wealth of knowledge to DynamicWorks as she specializes in the comorbidity of eating disorders and substance use.
Tammy previously served as an Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Eating Disorders Program in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She successfully obtained research funding from the National Institutes of Health and has published several manuscripts, primarily in medical journals, as well as presented at several conferences on eating disorders. Prior to her position at UNC, Tammy worked on several eating disorders research studies at The Methodology Center and the Center for Childhood Obesity, both at Pennsylvania State University, College of Health and Human Development. Regarding substance use, Tammy conducted research focused on neuroimaging (fMRI) and psychophysiological (EEG, EMG) in the Neuroimaging and Addiction Research Laboratories at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. In addition to conducting research, Tammy has taught several courses in psychology, given numerous lectures on eating disorders, and has served as a research consultant for medical doctors, faculty, students, and staff.
Tammy is passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice to optimize the best client experience. While Tammy is an expert on the science of eating disorders and substance use, she is also interested in clinical practice and thus the reason for pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Her plan is to merge science and practice in a way that improves the outcomes for both patients and families of those with an eating disorder. Tammy is intrinsically motivated by helping others and she hopes to contribute to the positive impact on the lives of others both through education and clinical treatment. In her spare time, Tammy enjoys spending time with her young daughter and pets, reading autobiographies, and trying out new plant-based recipes!
